Heroin Refiners Released By Junta Commander

[Despite denials from Burma's junta officials concerned, reports kept coming in about their involvement in drug activities. This latest one was received yesterday by S.H.A.N.]
Taunggyi, 6 August.

A battalion commander released drug refiners after receiving a hefty bribe from them, said D.I.N, S.H.A.N's source in Taunggyi.

A patrol from LIB 242 of Kutkhai in northern Shan State discovered a heroin refinery operated by a Zang Shi from Mongko Defense Army (MDA) in a deep forest on 28 July. Ltc. Tin Yu, Commander of LIB 242, released Zang Shi and his followers after receiving K. 1.1 million from the refiner.

A local villager told D.I.N. that "The incident is not unusual here. People are already accustomed to this kind of things".

The MDA is commanded by Monsala.
