Khin Nyunt Visiting Border Areas
Gen Khin Nyunt, top official of the Burmese regime known as the State Peace and Development Council, is due to visit the areas bordering Thailand tomorrow, reported SNA from Kengtung yesterday.
According to him, Gen Khin Nyunt's tour would include Homong, drug lord Khun Sa's headquarters 1985-1995 (opposite Maehongson), Mongtaw (opposite Wianghaeng District, Chiangmai) and Tachilek (opposite Chiangrai's Maesai District.)
"The Shan reception committee shall include Sao Mong Khwon (son of Mongnawng prince), Sao Zarmmai (a noted ex-commander of the Mongtai Army), Sao Sangmon (another ex-commander known for his intrepidity) and Mahaja (at present reported to be the richest man in Homong)", says SNA.
Maj.-Gen. Then Sein, Commander, Golden Triangle Command with headquarters in Kengtung, was reported to have flown to Mongtaw to supervise the reception there. "He and Col. Win Kyi, Commander, Military Operations Command (Mongtaw) visited the Fa Wiang-inn Monastery (straddling the Thai-Burma boundary) this morning," he said.
The road from the Tachilek airport to Hawngleuk has already been spruced up by the local people by orders from the local officials, according to him. "All the houses have to be painted anew in order to look nice to Khin Nyunt," he said. "They either have to do it themselves or let the officials do it for them at a price, they were told. Needless to say, nobody needs any incentive more than that."
