Pocket druglord gets away with it

A few days after he was caught with dope in his possession, a Shan protege of the Burma Army was discharged from the police cell where he was being held, said sources from Muse, across from China’s Ruili.

On 16 June, the Yueliendao (Moon-Shine Island) casino on the Mao-Shweli River was raided by the joint Sino-Burmese authorities. The owner “So-so Pyay-Pyay” Sai Htun Aye, 40, and his Chinese mistress were brought to Muse, after the raiders came across 3 assorted weapons and an unspecified amount of heroin and methamphetamine.

“The Chinese went back with the drugs, while the Burmese returned with Sai Htun Aye and his guns,” said a local source close to Sai Htun Aye’s family.

The officials also raided his home in Kawngnawng quarters, where his wife Nang Khammai, 36, lives and uncovered “a chest full of Chinese money,” they said.

However, two days after the event, Sai Htun Aye was freed reportedly on the orders of Maj-Gen Myint Hlaing, Commander of Lashio based Northeastern Region.

Sai Htun Aye, known by the name of the hotel he owns in Mandalay, So-so Pyay-Pyay (Fresh and Lively), shot up to fame and riches, after his insider information led to the downfall of Mongsala, leader of the Mongkoe Defense Army in November 2000.
