Salween survey crew returns to Bangkok
A written report from inside Shan State that came into S.H.A.N. hands only yesterday (2 July) due to border closure following tensions since May said 15 members of the Salween Rivercourse survey team from Thailand had departed for Thailand early last June.
The fact-finding group from Thailand's MDX Company, according to the New Era monthly, that had been at Tasang, the site of the projected hydropower dam, between Mongton in the east and Mongpan in the west, were escorted to Taunggyi and then to Rangoon on 5 June, wrote the source.
The New Era's May report said a 36-men team from Thailand, led by a Mr Sombat (family name unavailable), had arrived in Mongton in April for a 3-month study tour that would end sometime this month. It was not clear whether the rest of the team were still at Tasang or had left earlier.
The Tasang dam project that began in earnest since 1997 is being opposed by the local people and activists, both at home and abroad.
