Junta Closed Bars To Announce Exam Results
3 Tuesday, August
SHAN reports that the military government issued orders to all bars and shops selling alcohol to close off the day before announcing the high school exam results.
According to SHAN's reporter in Taunggyi, all bars, beer and alcohol shops in Rangoon were ordered by the State Peace and Development Council to close their business from 24 August to 26 August.
The results of the high school examinations were announced on 25 August. "The SPDC feared the students who failed in the exams would get drunk and create riots", said the report.
"The SPDC always announced exam results on the second Sunday of July each year. But this year, the second Sunday came the day before Martyrs' Day, 19 July, and the junta feared things would go completely out of control", added the report.
"Universities and colleges have been closed since 1996, so students who passed high schools have nowhere to continue their studies anyway", concluded the report.
