Khun Sa: I'll Be Back In Two Years

Back To The Past
25 December 1995

Warlord Khun Sa, on Christmas Day and on the eve of his surrender to Rangoon, said he would be back in two years.

At the parade ground in Mongmai, south of Homong, Khun Sa made a 30-minute address, his last public speech, to a gathering of soldiers and people.

"Please bear with patience for the next two years", he said. "Now is a period of confusion both for our fighters and our people. 'No leader since Zao Khun Sa is as good as him', when these words are uttered by the monks and the people, that is the time we can start anew under a new order. That's the time we shall win".

He surrendered formally to Rangoon on 7 January 1996.

Khun Sa's Mong Tai Army broke up after Karnyord, a deputy brigade commander mutinied on 6 June.
