Shan Leader Killed In Action

Back To The Past
5 December 1978

One of the prominent Shan resistance leaders was killed in action in central Shan State today, according to Shan State Army source.

Sao Hsokhan a.k.a Khun Oongpawng, Vice President of the Shan State Progress Party, was hit by a mortar shell during the Shan State Army's clash with the Burma Army near Wanpwee, Mongkerng Township, Loilem District.

He was one of the first batch of university students that joined the first resistance movement established by Sao Noi a.k.a Saw Yanda on 21 May 1958. His easygoing manner and the ability to work with people of different personalities was one of the reasons he was chosen as one of the all powerful 5 member War Council of the newly established Shan State Army then headed by Sao Nang Hearnkham, the Mahadevi of Yawnghwe and the first First Lady of the Union of Burma, in 1964.
