Today, 1 October 1922, British Shan States became a federal state.
The 34 princely states under the protection of the British, agreed to federate beginning today. It was the result of a fact finding trip to the Federated Malay States.
Before today, the Shan States was a confederacy. Beginning today, it was to be officially known as the Federated Shan States.
The Shans States was the amalgamation of principalities not all of whom were ethnic Shans, but united under the principle of non interference in each other's internal affairs.
Shans became independent from Burma's rule in 1882.
In 1885, The British occupied all of Burma and administered it as a crown colony.
It was only two years later, the British marched into the Shan States. It then became a British Protectorate and ally.
