Another Shan Town Razed By Fire
Fire razed a Shan village in Southern Shan State last week, making it the second community to be destroyed by fire in two weeks.
On 14 January, at 15:30 - 17:30, fire broke out in the village of Wanphui-Kholam, Namzang Township, Loilem District, Southern Shan State, consuming 146 houses. The loss was estimated at K. 19.9 million.
Altogether, 1,080 people were left homeless and foodless. Among them, 715 (male 309 and female 406) were above the age of 12, and 365 (male 179 and female 186) were under 12.
"Two days have passed, and no authority have come to investigate the matter, let alone help", the source reported on 16 January.
The first town to be destroyed by fire this year was Monghsu on 3 January. The blaze was started by the blowup of explosives kept in a warehouse. It wiped out more than a hundred houses. An unconfirmed report also said it killed and wounded up to 2,000 people.
