Border Pass Reopened

1 January 2000.

BP-1 (Border Pass Between Chiangmai and Mongton) reopened yesterday morning. It was ordered closed on 27 December after two attacks made by Yawdserk's Shan State Army on Burmese trucks, on 23 December and 26 December. The SSA representative, Khun Surh, handed over 84,000 amphetamine pills, reported to have captured during the first attack, to the Thai Army on the following day. Earlier, on 15 December, the Shans also handed over 400,000 pills to the Thai authorities. They claimed the Burma Army's involvement in drug activities was "beyond doubt."
