Burmans Don't Wish To Rule The Non-burmans: Aung San
Back To The
Past-Today
9 February 1947
The Burmans did not wish to rule over the hills regions, said Aung San At Panglong.
At a public gathering held this morning at 11:30, Aung San told those present regarding his talks in London the previous month. Although Burma's independence was assured, he did not think that it could be a genuine one unless the Frontier Areas were granted independence at the same time, he said.
"This was not because we wanted the Burmans to rule over the Frontier Areas", he argued. "It was because we wanted the Frontiers peoples to enjoy equal status and rights as the Burmese".
His speech was welcomed by the audience.
The Shans, Kachins and Chins continued with their discussions to establish the Supreme Council of the United Hills Peoples (SCOUHP) today.
The meeting with Aung San was scheduled for the following day, 10 February.
