The first chairman of the first Shan resistance movement passed away peacefully this morning, Maihoong reported from Fang District of Chiangmai.
Sao Kungna, 79, who was the first chairman of Noom Serkharn force set up by Sao Noi a.k.a. Saw Yanda in 1958, died peacefully of old age at his home in Mawnpin Village, Fang District.
He was a native of Maekian, Mongton Township, Monghsat District, Shan State. He had served as a financier for Saw Yanda for several years.
Saw Yanda died on 14 November 1996. He was 69.
Sao Paimong, 62, who used to serve as a security guard for Sao Noi remembers Kungna visiting the latter oneday in 1959. "I was on watch when he passed through the gate", said Sao. "As he was our chairman, I just saluted him, and didn't stop him to search for hidden weapons. Later, I found myself standing at rigid attention and receiving a long lecture from Sao Noi himself for my deriliction of duty".
Sao Kungna is to be cremated on Tuesday, 18 January.
