Shan villagers were busy constructing buildings to set up a gambling fair in Mongton during mid-May, according to several sources.
On 18 May, Lt. Col. Altogether 15 villagers from Napakao, 15 from Mawkzali, 15 from Wanmai, 15 from Maeken, 25 from Mongharng and 25 from Nakawngmu participated in the construction of 31 sheds, of which 30, (6x8 cubits) were for a variety of shops and 1 (10x15 cubits) for the casino.
Sources told S.H.A.N. shopkeepers and game operators were charged K. 5,000 and K. 150,000 per month respectively by the colonel.
Wanmai Naliu has been newly settled by Kokang Chinese from the far north of Shan State.
Gambling is prohibited by Burmese Law.
