Industrial Zone In Tachilek Chosen
Hawngleuk, northeast of Tachilek, has been designated an industrial zone to be operated by a business company set up by the United Wa State Army, said SNA from Kengtung.
The Hongpang Company, a business
firm established by the Wa with presumably substantial shares from
Chinese entrepreneurs, is to operate in the 602 acres of
agricultural land confiscated from the local people, he
said.
"The upcoming opening ceremony is rumored to be presided by Gen
Khin Nyunt (who is currently visiting the border areas)."
Hopang is reported to deal in
construction, transportation and "everything related to
mechanization."
Accordingly, villagers were summoned to Hawngleuk temple by the
authorities to sign their agreement to transfer the land to the
government.
"The villagers said they did not understand the situation enough to sign," he said. "But it doesn't make much difference anyway. Already portions of their land are being encroached by the junta authorized bulldozers."
