Conscription order issued

All battalions in southern Shan State must recruit at least 5 men monthly, instructed the order on 6 August, according to a report from northern Shan State.

The order emphasizes the importance of enlisting recruits from Kunhing, Mongpan and Langkher townships.

In eastern Shan State, the order had been out since 5 May to raise 5,000 new troops. A Captain Myo Thaung from Meikthila Induction Center, who arrived in Kengtung afterwards, issued a further directive for all village tracts to collect 60 men each.

A Lahu militia chief taken into custody

Hpo Thein a.k.a. Ja Teng, militia leader of Nakawngmu, Mongton Township, and his brothers Thein Ngin and Thein Naing were arrested at their camp on 25 August by IB 65, said LNDO, a Lahu information group. It also claimed Thein Ngin had already died from torture.

The news had surprised many people, it said, because the 3 had been known to be loyal followers of the Burmese Army.

Another source said Tin Win, a rival militia leader from Nakawngmu, had been gaining more trust and favor and that it was him who had "sold out" Hpo-Thein.

Daylight robbery in Muse

On 24 August, Liu Tongmei, a money-exchanger, from Christian Quarters, in Muse, opposite Ruili in Yunnan Province, set out from home to her office at the market at 09:00 when she was held up by 2 men.

The robbers took ¥ 200,000 and K. 30 million from her and escaped in a motorcycle.

One of the townspeople said it was a slap in the face for the security forces in the city. "They only care about taking money from us but not about protecting us," he said.
