Shan refugees might be sent back, said Thai official

An official from Mae Fah Luang District office in Chiangrai Province told S.H.A.N.'s source this morning that the recently arrived 600-Shan refugees at Therdthai Tract might be deported soon.

"We have heard no reports of fighting across the border for over a month now," he said. "According to Thai rule, we can only accept people fleeing from combat as refugees."

Nevertheless, he said he would report it to higher authorities to decide.
