Coordinating Committee for Karenni NGOs formed

A committee to coordinate the activities of 19 Karenni-originated groups was formed last week, said an activist for Karenni, also known as Kayah this morning.

"In the past, each group didn't know what the others were doing in the Karenni areas," said Shwe Myo Thant of Karenni Evergreen, who is also on the coordinating board of the Coordinating Committee for Karenni Society Organizations (CCKnSO) formed on 10 April at a seminar attended by 48 representatives from 19 organizations. "Thus we became easy prey to outsiders who were trying to take advantage of our confusion."

He however dismissed suppositions that the CCKnSO would become a screening body for project proposals inside Karenni areas. "That would hamper each group's independence and effectiveness," he said. "The main purpose of setting up the coordinating committee is to increase understanding and cooperation among the various groups."

He confirmed the CCKnSO enjoyed the support of non-member organizations such as the Karenni National Progress Party and the Karenni National Refugee Committee.

The CCKnSO can be contacted at the following address: P.O. Box 78, Maehongson 58000; Email: <kncco@cscoms.com>.
