Kachin ceasefire leader on world tour

An informed source in Chiangmai told S.H.A.N. today that a 4-man mission from the Kachin Independence Organization, a ceasefire group, had been on a study tour that began two weeks ago.

The team was made up of General Tu Jai, who replaced the ousted Zau Mai on 20 February last year; Dr. Tu Ja, known as the KIO's diplomat; La Ja, a less known officer and Khun Myat, known as a go-between during Rangoon's peace talks with several armed groups.

The purpose of the trip, however, is still obscure, according to the source who declined to be identified. "They were in Chiangmai until a week ago and talked mostly of cooperation among Kachins, both at home and overseas, for the betterment of the Kachinland," said the source. "There wasn't any discussion on current political situation".

The source also said many were disappointed of their inability to meet the aging Kachin leader privately, "General Zau Seng (who resides in Thailand) and Dr. Tu Ja would not allow us to see him," the source complained.

The 4 were accompanied by two former Thai intelligence officers, according to the source. "It was made known to us that they were to visit several other countries apart from Thailand," the source added.

The Kachins, under the leadership of the late Zau Seng, began their struggle against Rangoon in 1961. Thirty-three years later, reportedly under the pressure of China, the KIO made peace with the Burmese military.
