More than a thousand Japanese second-hand automobiles are to be exported to Burma through the Huei-pheung pass that connects Maehongson with Homong, retired warlord Khun Sa's former lair in adjacent Shan State, reports Thai language Matichon on 13 October
"The first lot, 28 of them, have been waiting in Maehongson's customs house for more than a month," said a military source, confirming the report.
Matichon identified the exporters as Dusit Beungbongkoch and Mrs Sirinaj Pisuraj of Thai Kyowa Sanyo Co.Ltd., Bangkok, and the importer as U Myint Thein of Interco Co.Ltd., Rangoon. The proposed arrangement, it says, has already been given the greenlight by the National Security Council.
The plan apparently received approval from all the powers in the area concerned, including various Burmese units, Homong's Maha Ja and, last but not least, the Shan State Army of Col Yawdserk.
"The spoils run between 80,000 - 120,000 baht apiece," confided an insider source.
