General

"Duty and Youth", released late last month by a new Shan band, Young Turks, is led by a song in tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of Burma's democratic struggle.

Parts of the lyrics read:

(Aung San Suu Kyi)3 Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize
On behalf of the people, she fought in peace against the wicked for human rights
A light that shines against powerful dark influence in Burma

(Aung San Suu Kyi)3 She is imprisoned by the military dictators ...
Darkness falls as red thick blood runs over Inya...

Who, among Shan leaders, can be as daring ...

The song, written and sung by Sai Leik, also preaches "the folly" of relying too much on a non-violent struggle:

"When the strong triumphs, the weak loses
For The big always devours the small
If the unjust can easily be beaten,
Nothing's difficult in this world...

When a peaceful struggle is waged,
Those with empty palms are the losers
For the big always devours the small

If the unjust is easily beaten
The world will no longer need guns."

Young Turks band is made up of members from Col Yawdserk's Shan State Army "South".
