Khun Thawda, 79, who had served as President of one of the first resistance movements passed away this morning in Bangkok.
Son of Sao Awng Pa, former chief administrator of Hsipaw state during the days when today’s Shan State was still a federation, he joined the resistance in 1959. In 1960, he was elected as President of Shan State Independence Organization. Four years later, the SSIO merged with other movements to form the Shan State Army and he was one of its five executive members collectively known as Shan State War Council. (Its president was the late Sao Nang Hearn Hkam, Burma’s first First Lady, who died last year).
In 1971, he retired and worked at the UPI.
His remains have been moved to Phra Siri Mahathat in Bangkhen, one of Bangkok’s well-known precincts.
