New crackdown on unlicensed vehicles

Reporter: Hawkeye and Pegasus

From 07:00-midnight, on 27 January, authorities in Kengtung, staged a citywide house-by-house search for unregistered motor vehicles, known as "without cars" in Burma, and rounded up more than 400 of them.

The situation is such even the Wa ceasefire group is reluctant to take risk and has been moving their "without cars" to Panghsang via the Mekong.

In Tachilek, citizens have been notified that 31 March is the deadline for owners of "without cars" to report to the local authorities.

Before the crackdown in late October Kengtung and Tachilek together had about 2,000 unlicensed vehicles.
