The first one to run the gauntlet is said to be the Japanese-owned, 193-roomed Thiripyitsaya Sakura Hotel in the ancient city of Bagan. Until the end of 2004, it has been running $ 1.42 million behind its payable amount. The total collective debt has now reached more than $ 36 million, said the sources.

The debit has been blamed on the government's failure to attract more tourists visiting the country.

Tachilek itself has two Thai-invested hotels: Golden Triangle Resort and Allure.
