Harvest Time

The following photos were taken by a Shan backpack team on a relief mission during March - April 2005, in the area of Namarkti - Kawng Teevee, north of Sanklang-Khailong, opposite Maehongson's Pang Mapha district.

Most of the farmers there are Pa-O. Poppy fields were so extensive many hills were almost denuded of trees.

At harvest time, Shans from the surrounding townships are there as hired farmhands. Opium tax is collected by the local militia that share the spoils with the local Burma Army units.
