Annual regional level meet to be held in Burma
Burma will be hosting the annual Regional Border Committee meeting (RBC) #24 in the Mon State capital of Moulmein, 10-12 May, according to Thai security sources.
Thailand will be represented by the Third (northern), First (central) and Fourth (southern) regional commanders, whose operational areas adjoin Burma's Triangle, Eastern, Southeastern and Coastal regional commands.
Last year's RBC talks held in Chiangmai were declared "successful" though no details were disclosed. A Thai foreign ministry official had complained that there were so many issues to discuss but very little time, according to the local The Manager Online.
Apart from re-demarcation of the boundary, a long standing problem between the two, at least two new topics have emerged since 27-29 June 2006, when RBC #23 took place, say sources:
The shooting and subsequent damaging of a Thai army helicopter by a Burma Army outpost on the Maehongson-Shan State border on 9 July 2006
The killing of Thai paramilitary ranger Cherdsak Tharananthawitthaya allegedly by a Burma Army patrol on the Maehongson-Kayah State border on 21 March 2007
The Burma Army had reportedly denied responsibility for both incidents.
