Tribute to Sao Seng Suk
How they remember him
We shall sorely miss him for
- his great sense of humor
- his initiative in drafting the Shan State constitution
- his irrepressive spirits
- his impressive ability, total integrity and intellectual brilliance
- his ability for teamwork
- importance placed in the building up of new blood, ethnic unity ("he did not forget the Kachins in Shan State") and women's rights
- his outstanding wife who not only took care of him but also served as his first line of defense
- his tactless bluntness
"When I saw his photo in your Internet newspaper, he
looked so much
like my mother. Actually, he was my mother's favorite son! When
he left our family in the 1950s, my mother was heart broken and we
dared not sing Pat Boone's "Bernadine" when my mother was around
because he used to sing that song a lot and that reminded her of
her beloved son." – Nang Mo Lao
"When we met in Mannerplaw in early 1990, you told
me that our struggle for democracy and peace would be tough, but not
impossible. And when we were sitting together at a constitutional seminar in
ChiangMai, you predicted that only a constitution of federal nature could keep
us together in unity, of course, in diversity. Again, we met in Manila to launch a federal constitution, you might
remember that we celebrated the successful launch in the Manila hotel with a
bottle of ' Black Label ', which we shared 50 US$ each. Since then we used to
meet at your favorite restaurant in ChiangMai, whenever I came to the old town.
I now realize that it was our last and friendly meeting in MaeSot, when we
attended the SCC meeting on February 21-22 early this year of 2007. I could not
forget your sincere offer to me
of ' fried fishes ', which you were trying to catch at a nearby small stream,
but unfortunately the fishes seemed to be quite scared of you." – U
Nwe Aung
How they regard him and his passing away
- He fought not only for the Shans but for federalism, democracy and national reconciliation for all the people of Burma
- He fought to rebuild the union with the spirit of Panglong
- His life was a blessing not only to the Shan State but Burma as well.
- A great loss
- It's high time we found new blood to keep the ball rolling
- "A tiger dies, another tiger fills in" – Shan proverb
The last words
Transient are conditioned things.
Try to accomplish your aim with diligence.
