PORTERS FROM MONG YARNG FEARED DEAD

PORTERS FROM MONG YARNG FEARED DEAD

From March to April 1995 the SLORC conscripted over 180 civilians from Mong Yarng in Eastern Shan State as porters. Each ward was also ordered to provide a mule or else pay a fine of 30 rupees (the old English coins-one rupee is worth 75 baht at the current rate.)

However, by May none of the porters have returned, and their relatives fear they are dead. They are now offering alms for their missing kin at local temples.
