The seminar, chaired by renowned Thai scholar Chattip Nartsupa, will be part of the 11-day field research trip being organized in Northeastern India, 22 January-1 February. The seminar is being organized to “crystallize contacts between the Tais of Northeast India” with “Shan of Myanmar, Lao of Laos, Thai of Thailand, Dai and Zhuang in China” “in view of India’s declared Look East policy which is being put into operation in cultural, commercial and political spheres,” according to the official statement.
“There will be scholars from Burma, Yunnan and Guangxi attending the seminar,” a source told SHAN.
Tais live in the Brahmaputra valley in Northeast India in general and Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in particular.
The Tai New Year, the First Waxing Moon of the First Lunar month, was ohserved for the first time in India in November. The next Tai New Year will fall on 5 December 2010, coinciding with the 82nd birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand.
