The Director General of the Employment Department today confirmed that there will definitely not be an opening for a new round of alien worker registration as the short fall in alien labour shall instead be solved through development of the systems for labour import. At the same time, the number of workers completing nationality verification has now risen to 70, 000 persons.

The above picture shows the signing of the Panglong Agreement between Bogyoke Aung San, who represented the Burmans, and Leaders and Princes of Shans, Kachins and Chins. It was agreed that different ethnic nations would join together as the Federal Union of Burma and ask Britain for independence. The principles being that all nation states should have equal status and opportunity and work together in peace and harmony. Therefore, the Panglong Agreement and the Constitution based on its principles became the foundation of the building of the Federal Union of Burma.

Over 100 ASEAN Legislators petition for tough action on Myanmar’s regime

The ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) has today communicated a message from lawmakers in the ASEAN region to ASEAN leaders attending the 16th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam to urgently take tough action on Myanmar’s military regime should its negotiations and engagement to obtain a clear and tangible commitment for a free and fair elections in the country fails. On 8 March 2010, the military government of Myanmar published new laws governing the electoral process for the nation’s general elections planned for later this year. Numerous provisions in the laws guarantee that the elections will not be open and inclusive of Myanmar’s diverse population, notably excluding participation of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, and Myanmar’s leading pro-democracy icon, Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners who form a substantial share of the leadership of non-military-aligned movements and political parties.  Read more....

Poi sanglong 'ordination festival' in Mae Taeng - Chiang Mai

Hello every one,

If you are in Chiang Mai right now, I would like to invite you to visit Wat Tiyasathan in Mae Taeng district, 40 kilometres to the north of Chiang Mai city. There is a huge poi sanglong 'ordination' festival going on there, from 29 March to 3 April, the biggest festival of poi sanglong i have ever heard, with around 200 boys, most of them aged between 7 and 15, dressed up as old time princes.
