The Dais of the Dehong Autonomous Prefecture, opposite Burma’s Shan State, are
throwing a 5-day cultural party in November and have invited their cousins
across the globe, particularly scions of the princely families, to join it,
according to an organizer.
Khun Noom, himself an offspring of the House of Mongkhawn, known by the Chinese
as Manxi, explained owning to the recent unrest in Burma, the organizing committee
would not be able to send formal invitations. “But their presence would be
greatly honored,” he said.
The organizing committee has also promised free bed and board for members of
the former princely houses.

The schedule, according to him, is as follows:
25
November
- Arrival in
Mongkhawn (Manxi)
26-27 November
- Seminar
28-29 November
- Sightseeing and
visiting former palaces
30
November
- Departure
There were 16 Shan-Dai principalities in China before the Communist takeover in
1949 and 34 Shan principalities in Burma before the relinquishment of their
traditional powers to the Shan State government in 1959.
Dai is a different spelling for Tai, as the Shans call themselves.
