Junta Unit Reshuffle Drew Fire From Thai Side

A well-informed source from the Thai border told S.H.A.N. yesterday troop reshuffle on the Burmese side had drawn fire from across the border.

The well-placed source, who requested anonymity, told S.H.A.N. the Burmese Army was replacing IB 510 in Namonluang, Homong Special Area, just across from Maehongson on 14 October with IB 249, when unidentified troops from the Thai side shelled them with artillery. "They must have mistaken the exchange of units in the Burmese Army as deployment for action", said the source.

AFP reporter on 19 October that Thailand and the United States were conducting a month-long joint military exercise called "Balance Torch 00-1". It also reported there was exchange of artillery fire "at least on one occasion".
