Junta Cuts Down Number of Toll Gates
Trucks transporting goods between Mandalay and Muse, the Shan State town opposite China's Ruili, would go through scrutiny from only two customs gates now, reported Hawmaohurng from Lashio on 30 December.
In accordance with the decisions made at Muse on 15 December, trucks running between Muse and Mandalay would not have to undergo inspections at all the four gates between the two cities anymore.
" All trucks will be inspected at each end and sealed afterwards which shall not be opened until it reaches the other end," said Hawmaohurng.
"It will save us some money now that we only have to pay two gates instead of four," said a truck driver to Hawmaohurng. "But we cannot be too happy in a hurry. Because they might still have something else up their sleeves to shake us down."
The distance of the two cities is 287 miles.
