Shans hold revered monk's birthday by thousands
Today 5 January is the 44th birthday of Khrubar Boonchoom Nyanasangvaro, the abbot of Mongphong, Tachilek, who left Burma in 2004 following travel restrictions imposed by the now defunct Military Intelligence Service(MIS). Thousands of his followers, including Burmans and Thais, have flocked to the Maelo monastery in Tambon Thakhao-pluak, Maechan district, Chiangrai province.
The pilgrims from Burma say they had encountered no problems coming here. Several officers at checkpoints on the road even asked the travelers to bring them souvenirs distributed by Khrubar on their return.
He is also said to be revered by the royal family of Bhutan, where he travels to each year.
