Sources informed S.H.A.N. recently that it was not only the National League for Democracy of Aung San Suu Kyi but also the Shan party that finished second in the whole of Burma and first in Shan State, whose members have been targeted for forced resignations.
Some township branch offices of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy have closed due to pressure from the military government, they said.
Among which was the Langkher branch committee office that had 19 executive members. 5 of its members, according to official sources, submitted their resignations to the U Win Myint, secretary of the township electoral commission on 21 January "of their own accord".
They were
Sai Htoon Aung (a) Sai Pa,
Secretary;
Sai Hla Tin, Joint Secretary;
Sai Tawk Htun, Organizer;
Sai Kanna, Organizer and
Sai Hsawhpi, Organizer.
Six have already been removed from the branch committee due to resettlement in other townships or death, they said.
They were
Sai Aung Toe, Chairman (moved to
Taunggyi);
Sai Htun Aung, Vice Chairman and M.P. (moved to Lashio);
Saw Htoo, Joint Secretary-2 (moved to Taunggyi);
Nang Mya Thein, Treasurer (moved to Taunggyi);
Sai Myint Aung, Organizer (moved to Mogok a.k.a. Mongkut) and
Sai Thein Pay, Audit (died).
The remaining members are also being "asked" to render their resignations, said the sources.
Langkher, 114 miles southeast of Taunggyi, is known for its great son, Htoon Myint, a signatiory of Panglong Agreement that united the Shan States and Ministerial Burma in 1947.
