A year after the arrest of 2 prominent leaders of National League for Democracy in Kengtung, one more had been languishing in jail without trial since mid September, said sources coming to Tachilek.
Oon Kham, 49, Vice Chairman of the NLD's Kengtung branch, was reportedly taken into custody by MI (Military Intelligence) 22, after he tried to solicit for a local militiaman who had lost his rifle. The militiaman is Sai Keow, a fellow-villager of Kardtao, 7-miles north of the city. Details however are still lacking.
Oon Kham was elected Vice Chairman following the arrest of Sai Hpat, Vice Chairman of NLD (Shan State) and Saw Nandi, Chairman of NLD (Kengtung branch) on 13 September 2002. Sai Hpat died on 9 October under mysterious circumstances, while Saw Nandi was subsequently sentenced to 14 year imprisonment.
The present Chairman of NLD (Kengtung branch) is Sai Liengwan.
Update
USDA rises again
(12 October 2003)
The 1 village 5 member quota had been applied to all townships in
eastern Shan State, said sources. 13tenth graders and 7 college
students from Kengtung's Kang Nalong village, Quarter #4, were allowed
pass their examinations although their accumulated marks were less than
40 per subject, because they were members of the USDA, they
claimed.
