Shan Party seeks release of leaders
Members of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, who were in Rangoon to attend its postponed 10-12 February Executive Committee meeting has jointly proposed freedom of their leaders arrested last week, reports one of its members from the border:
The petition, signed by Vice President Sao Moe Kyi, MP of Mongpan, was sent by "special mail" to Senior General Than Shwe yesterday, said the source who wishes to remain unnamed. However, he was as yet unable to provide a copy of the letter.
All of them left Rangoon yesterday.
Meanwhile, more than 20 staff members of Japan's Overseas Courier Service in Rangoon that had been ordered to close off yesterday were told they need not return to their office on the Mahabandoola Park Street in Kyauktada township anymore. It had been managed by Hkun Htoon Oo's son, Hkun Oo Lwin, 26, since his arrest last week.
