Rangoon Shans to mark Shan State Day - again

A meeting was held at Kambawza Dhammayone, a gathering place for people from Shan State in Rangoon, on New Year's Day to discuss the celebration of Shan State Day that falls on 7 February, reports Chai Sayam from the border:

The meeting was called following permission by Rangoon authorities on condition that the celebrations come under the heading, "Shan State Nationalities Cultural Variety Show". The organizers were not allowed to use the familiar title "Shan State Day".

Apart from Shans, representatives from Ta-arng (Palaung), Danu and Intha also participated in the meeting.

Kambawza Dhammayone is located southeast of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda in Bahan township.

Several Shan leaders and activists were arrested following 7 February last year. The day came into being in 1947 when the leaders of Shan State, then a British protectorate administered separately from Burma, decided to join Burma in the struggle for independence.
