Key Lahu dissident undergoes operation

U Aye Maung aka Ja Hpeu, 66, leader of a Lahu dissident faction in Thailand, went through a surgical operation following disclosure of brain congestion early yesterday morning.

Aye Maung, at the time of this reporting (10:30), has yet to regain consciousness more than 24 hours after the operation at Chiangmai's McCormick Hospital. According to a family friend, he has for some time been suffering from high blood pressure and immediate recovery is not expected.

Aye Maung, a native of Mongyang, northeast of Kengtung, co-founded the Lahu Democratic Front

(LDF), a member group of the National Democratic Front (NDF), in 1998. The group's integrity was dealt a blow when more than 30-men led by his own son Ja Htaw surrendered to the Burmese authorities in Tachilek on 28 June 2004.
