Khin Nyunt Reclaiming Weapons From Ex-MTA

An-unconfirmed report coming from the border said that Gen Khun Nyunt, Secretary 1 of the State Pease and Development Council, who is currently visiting the border areas has issued orders to reclaim weapons given to the ex-MTA that surrendered four years ago.

He had three stop overs yesterday, said the source, one in Homong, another in Mongtaw and the next in Monghsat. "He arrived with two helicopters in Mongtaw at 11:00 and stayed there for nearly two hours. He then continued his way to Monghsat."

Although details of his visit was still undisclosed, it was believed that weapons issued to the ex-MTA commanders to form anti-insurgency militia units were ordered to return to the local Burmese units. "We don't know how many weapons had been taken back in Homong, but at least 22-assorted weapons were reclaimed by the military operations command in Mongtaw."

The source said she was not sure of the reason of the policy turnabout. "Likely they don't trust the ex-MTA offices who used to be Yawdserk's associates before 1996."
