Junta sends 400 officers to Russia

A source close to the military says some 400 Burmese officers took off to Russia from Mandalay at 04:00 yesterday, reports Hawkeye from Maesai:

"This is the third batch sent by Rangoon to be trained since 2001," said the source from the business sector who maintains close ties within the military circles.

"One of the trainees is the son of my very best friend. Its from her that I learned of the event."

According to the source, the said officer departed on one of the two Russian planes that flew in earlier.

"The ongoing build-up of the military is certainly not a sign that the generals are ready to transfer power to the people anytime soon," commented a Thai Burma-watcher.

S.H.A.N. was unable to find other sources to confirm the news.
