Reinforced by troops coming from Mongton and Monghsat, the United Wa State Army's 171st Military Region, commanded by Wei Hsuehkang, have since 1 April began its attack of a vital Shan State Army position opposite Mai Lan, a village in Mae Lana tract, Pang Mapha district, Maehongson province, according to both Shan and Thai sources.

The Wa sustained more than 10 casualties yesterday when they employed a "human wave "assault against the SSA firebase. The defenders also suffered 1 killed, 4 wounded, one of them seriously, according to an SSA source.

Panghsang, the Wa supreme headquarters, has denied the operation has obtained its blessings.
